JTTCOMB- What is Shedding?

Welcome to the unwonderful world of shedding. No one enjoys shedding because it means a hair is totally gone and now we restart the growing process.

Shedding is definitely a natural thing. 10% of our hair is in the non-growth phase at one time, so shedding is not as invasive as we make it. We only shed hair once every 7-10 years so when you think about it, you shed less often than you celebrate a birthday.

We can do many things to reduce shedding. Drink more water. Eat healthier. Drink coffee and tea. Eat more garlic. Do coffee and tea rinses. Have a clean scalp. Know your scalp issues. Relax less and know how to properly relax the hair. A true professional should never leave you with scalp burns after a relaxer treatment. Sometimes we are our own professionals and not the people we pay. Using less sulphates. Avoiding applying conditioner directly to the scalp. Not using products on the scalp. Even changing a relaxer can reduce or increase shedding.

Shedding is a little less uncontrollable because its going to happen, regardless of what you do. Vitamins, treatments and health doesn’t matter in the great debate of shedding, as its natural. When shedding gets excessive, then you want to look at habits (like stress and manipulation) and underlying health problems (any number of things). But excessive means more than your normal 50-100 hairs on average a day. Be well, be wise and be patient.
